Health officials issued a warning about a powerful sedative that’s been recently detected in illicit drugs found in Southern Nevada.
Medetomidine, also known by its street name “rhino tranq,” was first discovered in illegal drug supplies on the East Coast several years ago.
The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) says five samples tested positive for medetomidine since July last year.
“Medetomidine is a veterinary sedative, so that kind of gets at why it’s nicknamed rhino tranq,” said Marco Mendez, a public health evaluator for SNHD.
