Empowered Pathways: Expanding Nevada’s Approach to Opioid Use Across the Lifespan with Dr. Eboni January

This November, the Nevada Opioid Center of Excellence (NOCE) is proud to welcome back Dr. Eboni January, MD, FACOG for an all-new four-part learning series, Empowered Pathways: Addressing Opioid Use Across the Lifespan in Nevada.

Dr. January previously joined NOCE as a featured panelist during our recent Listening Session on Opioid Use Disorder Impact in Special Populations Part 2: Birth, Beyond, and Across the Lifespan, where she shared clinical and lived-experience insights about the intergenerational effects of opioid exposure. Her perspective sparked meaningful discussion about how care systems can better support families from birth through older adulthood — and now, she returns to continue that conversation through this powerful statewide learning series.

About the Series

The Empowered Pathways series is designed to strengthen Nevada’s approach to prevention, treatment, and recovery with special emphasis on maternal health and family systems. Each session offers participants practical tools, lived-experience perspectives, and data-driven insights to help improve outcomes for individuals and families statewide.

Meet Dr. Eboni January

Dr. January — known to many as Dr. EJ — is a board-certified OB/GYN, health equity advocate, and community educator whose work bridges medicine, cultural awareness, and systems change. Her mission is to improve maternal health outcomes by ensuring that every mother — regardless of background or circumstance — has the knowledge, confidence, and community she deserves.

Her new book, Empowered Motherhood: A Pregnancy, Postpartum & Parenting Guide for Modern Families, explores many of the same themes featured in this series — blending evidence-based information with practical tools and heartfelt encouragement for families navigating pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and parenting through modern challenges.

Continuing the Conversation on Season 2 of the NOCE Dose

Dr. January’s participation in our recent Listening Session, Opioid Use Disorder Impact in Special Populations Part 2: Birth, Beyond, and Across the Lifespan, sparked meaningful dialogue about the intergenerational and developmental impacts of opioid exposure. That conversation now continues through both the Empowered Pathways learning series and the launch of Season 2 of the NOCE Dose Podcast.

In Season 2, NOCE examines how Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) affects specific population groups that experience distinctive health vulnerabilities, including youth, older adults, individuals with disabilities and neurodivergence, birthing women, and Tribal Nations. Grounded in evidence-based frameworks for trauma-informed care, developmental risk, and structural competency, this season integrates firsthand narratives with data on service gaps to better understand how age, ability, neurodevelopment, and community context influence OUD risk trajectories and access to care.

Dr. January joins us for an upcoming NOCE Dose episode to reflect on the Listening Session on Opioid Use Disorder Impact in Special Populations Part 2 and share insights on maternal health, family systems, and how Nevada can build more equitable pathways to recovery across the lifespan.
