Extended Learning Lecture: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) 101

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the ACE Study, its key findings, and the connection between ACEs and health outcomes, including substance use disorders.
  2.  Explain how toxic stress impacts brain development, the body’s stress-response systems, and mental health, particularly as it relates to substance use risk factors.
  3. Identify the systemic issues that perpetuate cycles of trauma and substance use.
  4. Explore Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs), protective factors, and evidence-based interventions that counteract ACEs and foster resilience.
  5. Participate in a reflective exercise designed to strengthen internal resilience while establishing the foundation for the importance of Community Resiliency Model (CRM).
