People who inject and use drugs (PWID/PWUD) are at increased risk for skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI’s) and chronic wounds. This training will provide an overview of the different types of wounds and infections encountered with PWUD as well as low barrier treatment options.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the types of wounds and infections encountered in PWUD.
- Understand basic wound assessment and treatment options.
- Develop a harm reduction approach to wound care in PWUD.
- Reduce wound stigma in individuals with substance use disorders.
Presented by: Michael Huyck DNP, FNP, CARN-AP
Michael Huyck is a Family and Addiction Nurse Practitioner with the University of Illinois at Chicago Community Outreach Intervention Projects where he focuses on integrating substance use disorder treatment and primary care in settings such as syringe exchanges, mobile, and street health programs. His clinical interests include piloting evidenced based interventions to address problems specific to populations with substance use disorders including wound care, ultrasound-guided phlebotomy, and low barrier access to medications for the treatment of Opioid Use Disorder.
