SUMMARY:Truth or Hysteria: Investigating Cannabis-Fentanyl Myths
DESCRIPTION:As the presence of fentanyl has increased in recent years\, so have concerns and reporting about fentanyl contamination of other substances like cannabis. This webinar will look at toxicological evidence\, case studies and drug sample data to discuss what we know and don’t know about cannabis-fentanyl contamination and how to discuss these risks with the public to provide accurate information and avoid spreading misinformation. \nObjectives \n\nDifferentiate between verified cases and unsubstantiated claims of fentanyl-laced cannabis by reviewing current toxicological evidence\, case studies\, and forensic reports.\nRecognize the limitations and challenges of Law Enforcement presumptive testing in detecting fentanyl in complex drug samples\, especially cannabis.\nApply evidence-based messaging strategies when discussing suspected fentanyl contamination in cannabis with the public\, clients\, or colleagues to promote informed and accurate communication.\n\nPresented by: \nRobert Lawlor\, MS-ADPP\, MS\, BSCJ\, Drug Intelligence Officer\, New England HIDTA Connecticut Overdose Response Strategy (ORS)  \nRobert F. Lawlor Jr. is a nationally recognized expert in policing\, investigations\, addiction\, overdose response\, and the intersection of public health and public safety. A former police investigator and supervisor with the New Haven Police Department\, he now serves as the Drug Intelligence Officer for Connecticut with New England HIDTA. Robert is a frequent speaker at national conferences\, an adjunct professor in Legal Studies at South College\, and a passionate advocate for first responder wellness and mental health. He holds master’s degrees in Criminal Investigations and Addiction Policy and Practice from the University of New Haven and Georgetown University. \nAnna Gasinski\, CPS\, Public Health Analyst- Overdose Response Strategy (ORS)\, CDC Foundation/New England HIDTA \nAnna Gasinski is a seasoned public health professional and Certified Prevention Specialist with expertise in youth substance use prevention\, behavioral health and overdose response. She serves as a Public Health Analyst with the CDC Foundation for the Overdose Response Strategy in Connecticut\, where she works to bridge public health and public safety efforts. She is also a certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor in Adult\, Youth and Public Safety curriculums. She previously served as the Drug Free Communities Prevention Coordinator for the Town of Stratford and Prevention Specialist with BHcare’s Alliance for Prevention and Wellness. Anna previously served as the President of the CT Association of Prevention Professionals and was recognized as the 2024 CAPP Connecticut Prevention Professional of the Year. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health from Southern Connecticut State University and is currently pursuing a Master in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee. \nContinuing Education Units: 1.5 CEUs \nThis training is approved for continuing education by the boards listed here.
